This is my public con report. Please link to this rather than to any of my friends-only posts if you want everyone to be able to read it.

Pictures from the con are here.

This was my third FilkContinental, and probably the best of them so far.

Debbie, Allison, and Jodi (Urban Tapestry) are favorite people of mine, and going to a con with them is always a special treat. They had two concert slots, as well as participating in a workshop, lots of open filk and stairwell filking. This con was in a castle, so they weren't your everyday stairwells!

Last year I'd sent Debbie a German translation of "I Love the Morning," a duet for morning person and night person, and one of my favorites among her songs. They worked really hard on it, and it came off well. But the song of theirs which really stole the show was "Wo Ist der Bahnhof," a song of the perils of traveling in Germany while knowing exactly one sentence of German. (The song is in English except for that sentence.)

Undoubtedly the most infamous moment of the con was the appearance of Franlkin Gunkelmann, a big, bearded guy, in a Sailor Moon outfit. I was told that this was the result of the previous year's auction. It put even Phil Allcock's Rachel in the shade.

Not having taken detailed notes, I can't do justice to all the other performers. But just to mention a few: GeBORGt (which literally means "borrowed," though the capitalization suggests that "assimiliated" would be more appropriate); Steve and Katy; Eva Wiest (who wrote the Pegasus-nominated "Stimmen im Wind," and along with her boyfriend Rafael very graciously hosted me in Mainz after the con); Sib doing Lord of the Rings as transformed by Chinese subtitlters, Zander breaking up Valerie as she sang "Second-Rate Songs"; the harmony workshop, which went into extra rehearsals before we were ready to perform; much else.

Back to Urban Tapestry for a moment; at their performance workshop on Saturday morning, they did the Hockey Monkey song and expressed the hope someone would translate it into German. It's a short song, and lines started popping into my head right away. I got help from a few Germans, most notably Franklin, and had it finished after lunch. I figured I'd sing it at the dead dog (sorry, Dead Elk) with some Germans for assistance, but at their concert, UT asked me on the spot, in front of the whole audience, if I'd sing it right there as an add-on to their performance of the original. Somehow I said yes, and even if I stumbled on a line or two, the audience liked it.

The con was allowed to go over its designated membership cap, which overstressed the function space. There were about 120 people at the con. For next year, the con will be capped at 90 people, will run into Monday, and will have three guests. Two of those guests are Talis Kimberly and Judith Hayman; the third hasn't been named yet.

89 of those 90 memberships were sold out at the con! I've heard that the remaining one may be auctioned at 1812 Tone, though this may not be a definite plan yet. But I've got one of those memberships, so if nothing goes awry in the next year, I'll be back there!

Whoops, sorry for linking to the wrong URL. I've fixed it.

Thanks for the kind words about Urban Tapestry, Gary. And THANK YOU SO MUCH for your language translation of both I Love The Morning and The Hockkey Monkey Song, *and* for coming up at the end of our concert with zero rehearsal. :-) You did a fantastic job!
